To ensure that construction in Madeira is directed towards housing, BE proposes applying a moratorium on the construction of new hotels and luxury developments for four years, and a 25% share of the construction area for housing at controlled costs in the licensing of all new real estate projects.

The Left Bloc (BE) presented a set of measures for housing. Among them are the end of visas gold and the end of support, whether public or European, for luxury real estate projects.

In order to ensure that the construction carried out in the Autonomous Region of Madeira is aimed at housing, BE also proposes the application of a moratorium on the construction of new hotels and luxury developments for four years, stating that the “priority” in developable land has to be housing.

The party force also wants to impose a 25% quota of the construction area for housing at controlled costs in the licensing of all new real estate projects.

In the rental market, BE highlighted that it has already presented several measures, including the imposition of maximum ceilings on rents.

“In Madeira there is no shortage of construction, but there is a shortage of houses. The priority of the Government led by Miguel Albuquerque, with the support of CDS-PP and PAN, is not the construction or rental of houses that Madeiran families can afford, but rather the promotion and support of the luxury market, accommodation local, to real estate funds. The Left Bloc defends another paradigm, intends to open other paths and place the needs of Madeirans and Porto Santos at the center of political action. We all know that the project of PSD Madeira and the right in general is more and more construction of luxury apartments and hotels”, stated BE.

For BE, the housing crisis “requires urgent and courageous measures”.

The party force highlighted that it frequently receives reports of “evictions or unexpected increases in rent that dramatically affect the lives” of many Madeiran families.

“There are those who say that the market has to work. The Bloc believes and defends that respect and dignity are priceless and that everyone has the right to a home to live in. It is the first condition and foundation of the human being, which is built in family and community. We frequently hear news that housing prices continue to rise and that Madeira, one of the poorest regions in the country, is the one where prices are rising the most”, added the party.
