Crisis at Fartetch: 1,000 workers laid off in Portugal

-

A Farfetch – now owned by South Korean Coupang – wants to reduce between 25% and 30% of its workforce worldwide. With around 3,000 workers in Portugal, the technology company wants to lay off 1,000.

700 will have already accepted the company’s proposal to leave by mutual agreement without the right to unemployment benefit, while 200 have a fixed-term contract that will no longer be renewed. And a hundred employees are in the process of collective dismissal.

The lawyer who represents 50 of these workers says that the negotiation provided for by law never took place, just a meeting to present Farfetch’s proposal.

After analyzing the contracts and the collective dismissal proposal, Marisa Simões refuted the criteria invoked by the company. The lawyer talks about false criteria and denounces that workers are being pressured to accept Farfetch’s terms.

Workers who agreed to give interviews spoke anonymously for fear of reprisals. They denounce, in addition to pressure, what they say is moral harassment.

The workers now admit to going to court to challenge the collective dismissal. SIC asked Farfetch for clarification, but received no response.
