The new movement that is committed to reactivating the “Fátima a Concelho” cause, led by António Neves Martins, formally presented itself at a press conference on Friday, April 12th.

More than two decades after the presidential veto on the elevation of Fátima to a municipality, the leader of the movement believes that it continues to make sense to fight for this cause. “The specificities of a land like Fátima are increasingly evident and greater”, he stated, considering that “the municipal structure does not fully respond to the entire range of needs that Fátima feels every day”.

Neves Martins confessed to feeling “harmed” because Fátima is not a municipality. As an example, he mentioned the case of Estrada de Minde, which is undergoing extensive redevelopment. This work “is 20 years behind the times,” he said. And he recalled that, at the time, “it was agreed with the Alcanena Chamber that Ourém would resume the improvement of the same road on the Vale Alto site, Minde parish. This has never been done. 20 years have passed. It’s a shame. As a Fatimist I feel offended.”

“Fátima has to get what she deserves”, he argued. The council will be the “replacement of a sense of justice that betrayed us”, he added, referring to the presidential veto. “Our cause is Fátima”, he highlighted. And “as there are no two without three”, the proposal to elevate Fátima to a municipality “will pass” in Parliament and the decision “will be in the hands of the President of the Republic”.

Neves Martins clarified that at the base of the movement there is no interest other than the “will of the people”. And also “there is no intention of conflict”, he assured. And he made it clear that “our movement is autonomous from ideas, we will not confront any type of democratically instituted power”. In relation to Ourém, “zero hostilities on our part”, he assured. He also added that the movement is awaiting an appointment with the Municipality of Ourém. And he reaffirmed: “Our proposal is always a friendly conversation with everyone”.
