A PRIO started your new regular biofuel distribution service, by rail, at the Port of Aveiro, with the first service being completed on Friday, April 19th. In total, two trains each transported 720 tons of biofuel produced from waste at the PRIO Novas Energias complex located in the port.

In addition to the benefits in reducing the carbon footprint, this diversification of alternatives, with rail transport emerging as an additional option to the existing road and sea transport, also allows for greater management from a logistical point of view.

“PRIO has sought to innovate and decarbonize at all stages of the supply chain, from the production phase to delivery of the final product to our customers. What we feel from the market is that there is an increase in demand for quality and more environmentally friendly fuels. It is a great sign that the market has given regarding the energy transition and the Port of Aveiro has been an essential partner for PRIO to be able to provide its customers with options that reflect our commitment to decarbonization”, highlights Luís Nunes, COO of PRIO.

The role of the Port of Aveiro will be essential to guarantee the conditions for the movement and loading of freight trains.

Last February, the company took an additional step in this diversification of options, with a first supply at the Port of Aveiro of ECO Bunkers B20, a more ecological and efficient fuel that reinforces PRIO and the Port of Aveiro’s commitment to decarbonization in the maritime sector.

“Allow us to highlight the importance of the first commercial use of the bundle of lines at the Port of Aveiro’s Liquid Bulk Terminal, both for the decarbonization of transport, this first train allows 26 trucks to be removed from the road between the Port of Aveiro and Sines, and transported its cargo on an electric train, either to continue reinforcing the position of the Port of Aveiro as an important hub multimodal logistics at European level”, says Eduardo Feio, President of the Board of Directors of the Port of Aveiro.

PRIO’s expectation is that the transport of FAME by rail will occur on a recurring basis.
