The Local Administration Workers’ Union (STAL) warned of the existence of asbestos coverings in the construction sites of the Câmara do Crato (Portalegre) and considered the changing rooms and dining areas “undignified”, but the municipality de-dramatized them.

The coordinator of STAL’s Portalegre regional directorate, Paulo Canau, told the Lusa agency that asbestos coverings are “a problem that has existed for several years”, but that the municipality has “been ignoring” this case.

In a statement, STAL announced that city workers met yesterday morning in plenary and later delivered a resolution with their demands to the municipal services.

“We want the construction of a suitable shipyard, a spa that doesn’t exist, a cafeteria”, because “that is an unworthy little hole, full of damp”, said Paulo Canau.

According to the same union leader, in the district of Portalegre, STAL has identified the Crato Municipality shipyard as “the worst” in the region.

Contacted by Lusa, the mayor of Crato, Joaquim Diogo, de-dramatized the situation, guaranteeing that “it is in the pipeline” to move forward with the construction of a new shipyard.

The mayor also explained that he has in his possession a report from a certified company that states that the asbestos in the current shipyard “is not releasing any type of particles”.

The mayor also explained that the new shipyard will be built in the industrial zone of that Alentejo town.

However, at this point, Joaquim Diogo said he could not yet come up with dates, nor with values relating to the cost of the work, “because it has to do with financing” which has yet to be stipulated.

When asked by Lusa about the current conditions in the changing rooms and in the space where workers eat their meals, Joaquim Diogo argued that they “have the minimum conditions”.
