You metrobus projects in Portugalbetter known by the English acronym BRT (“bus rapid transit”), are multiplying in Portugal and could now be worth at least 1,500 million euros, says Público this Tuesday. Between the design and construction phase, there are already 225 kilometers of route planned in 12 different projects.

The most advanced projects are the Metro Mondego, in Coimbra, and the BRT that will connect the Boavista area to Salvador beach, in Porto. In the latter case, the inauguration is scheduled for the summer, a year and a half after construction work began. AND It is precisely due to the speed with which it can be implemented, in just one mandate, that this type of systems is gaining followers across the country.

From north to south, several BRT projects are planned, which symbolize the failure of CP to respond to demand with more quality supply and of Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) which did not modernize the railways in a timely manner or, if it did, it did without large capacity. To manage these projects, companies are creating municipal or intermunicipal companies, so as not to lose control over them..

The Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) also helped to finance some of the new systems, such as the Boavista metrobus (66 million euros completely non-refundable).
