Furiosa: Director reveals why he replaced Charlize Theron with Anya Taylor-Joy in Mad Max spin-off – Cinema news

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga tells the origin story of the renegade warrior Furiosa.

Furiosa, a spin-off from Mad Max: Fury Road, arrives soon in Brazilian cinemas. And, despite the film exploring the origin of Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in the 2015 film, director George Miller chose to reformulate the character in this derivative, giving the role to another actress: Anya Taylor-Joy.

According to the website CBR, George Miller justified the decision, above all, for technical reasons. Furiosa is a prequel to Mad Max. Therefore, Furiosa’s interpreter should be even younger than she was in the first film. The solution would be to try to apply anti-aging technology, an effect similar to what Martin Scorsese used in The Irishman, for example. But, George Miller isn’t exactly the biggest fan of such technology. He said:

“It definitely would have been Charlize, if Furiosa had been made before [Mad Max] Fury Road […] As time went on, I started thinking, ‘Oh, maybe we could do rejuvenation.’ Then I watched really masterful filmmakers like Ang Lee and Martin Scorsese, and I saw that it wouldn’t have been persuasive.” (Via: CBR).

Convinced of the limitations of this technology, and seeking to achieve maximum realism for the production, Miller looked for an actress who would embody Furiosa with precision, as much as Charlize Theron did. And after a recommendation from director Edgar Wright (Last Night in Soho), Anya Taylor-Joy seemed to be the best choice: “There is an innate quality about Taylor-Joy. She is a very determined and rigorous person” says George Miller.
