The Batman actor in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy revealed a curious detail about his meetings with Tom Hardy on the set of the third film.

In 2012, after fighting the Scarecrow and the Joker in the first two films of the trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan, Batman (Christian Bale) found himself facing a new and formidable enemy: the relentless and menacing Bane, played by the masked Tom Hardy. The two confrontations between them (first in the sewers of Gotham, then in the middle of the final battle that unfolds through the streets of the city) are, without a doubt, among the most memorable sequences in Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.

Batman Vs. Bane

Although fans of the saga probably know these confrontations very well, they may have never noticed a very curious little detail between the two characters. As Christian Bale recently said, the two actors created a very discreet communication code to help them coordinate their work while filming scenes.

“We were very far away from each other, and I couldn’t hear what he was saying because there was so much noise, and he couldn’t hear what I was saying either. (…) Every time Christopher Nolan said, ‘Guys, you’re not responding to each other,’ we told him we couldn’t hear anything,” the actor revealed to Heart, without specifying exactly which confrontation between Batman and Bane he was referring to.

A little finger signal

“So with Tom [Hardy], I would say my lines and then make a little sign with my finger, to let him know that I had finished and that it was his turn. Then he would say part of it and do the same thing. (…) I hope no one notices this in the film, but that’s how we communicated.”

So, if you’re a fan of The Dark Knight Rises, all you have to do now is watch the confrontations between Batman and Gotham’s villain in slow motion to try to identify any finger movement on the part of one of the two protagonists.
