Dune: Part 2 is a success in theaters and Denis Villeneuve revealed the condition for him to make the third film in the saga.

Dune: Part 2 is a hit in theaters, Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to the first Dune released in 2021, and obviously fans are already waiting for the new chapter in the saga. From the beginning, Villeneuve made his dream of making a Dune trilogy clear, but now the director reveals an important condition for making a third film.

Will Dune: Part 2 be continued? This is Denis Villeneuve’s plan for the sci-fi franchise with Timothée Chalamet

The first and second films adapted Frank Herbert’s first book, while the third film would be responsible for book two, Messiah of Dune. But don’t expect Dune 3 anytime soon, as Denis Villeneuve intends to do it the right way, without rushing.

“I made the two films back-to-back, which makes perfect sense to me,” Villeneuve tells Empire. “I thought it was a good idea to move forward right after Part One. We were already designing, writing, etc. But it also meant that for six years I was on Arrakis non-stop, and I think it would be healthy to take a step back,” says the director about the time he needs. “First, make sure we have a strong script. What I want to avoid is not having something ready. I’ve never done that and now I feel like it could be dangerous because of the enthusiasm. We need to make sure all the ideas are on paper.”

More than that, Denis Villeneuve reinforces the condition for him to make Dune 3:

If we go back, it needs to be real, it needs to be relevant, if I ever do Dune Messiah, [é] because it will be better than Part Two. Otherwise I don’t do it

Dune 3 has not yet been officially announced, but it should happen soon due to the success of Dune: Part 2. Villeneuve previously confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the Dune 3 script “is almost ready, but needs a little work now.”

In Dune: Part 2, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) teams up with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen as he seeks revenge on the conspirators who destroyed his family. A spiritual, mystical and martial journey begins. To become Muad’Dib, while trying to prevent the horrible but inevitable future he witnessed, Paul Atreides sees a Holy War in his name, spreading across the known universe. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the universe, Paul must avoid a terrible future that only he can predict and guide humanity toward a promising future.
