A rescue that began to be carried out in an unpretentious way, with the aim of gathering memories, led Campinas native Juninho Ortiz, who has worked in audiovisual and television for 31 years, to create an important documentary about a housing complex that became a city within Campinas. Vila Padre Anchieta, today part of the Nova Aparecida district, in the North of the city, has an interesting story that will be told in a documentary lasting just over an hour, scheduled for release in June at Teatro Maria Monteiro. Beforehand, this weekend (Saturday and Sunday), residents will be able to watch a short version of the film first-hand, on an outdoor screen that will be installed in the central area of the district (Praça da Integração, known as Praça do Skate) . The free screening of the short version of the documentary produced by Juninho Ortiz, from Melífero Filmes, coincides with the neighborhood’s 60th anniversary.

The images show how it all started. A piece of land measuring approximately 1.5 million square meters that belonged to Fepasa was declared public utility by former mayor Lauro Péricles in 1975. The mayor who came later, Francisco Amaral, used the Campinas Housing Company (Cohab) for the construction project for 3,500 units (including houses and apartments) that were occupied by around 20 thousand people in the early 1980s. The inauguration, in 1982, was attended by the then President of the Republic, General João Figueiredo. The first residents lived with a lot of dust, suffered from a lack of water, had difficult times with a lack of energy, and had great difficulty moving around due to the distance, but the neighborhood has only grown since then.

The last interview recorded by former mayor Francisco Amaral was for this documentary, says Ortiz. He used as a source of information, in addition to documents and testimonies, newspaper reports Popular Mail and the extinct Diário do Povo, which even published a magazine about the housing complex to be released at the inauguration event. Ortiz highlights that “the documentary begins in 1976 and continues to show the evolution until the present day, with the vision of the residents of Aparecidinha who saw the beginning of the works, the first residents in 1980 reporting their impressions and difficulties, in addition to the generation of children and grandchildren who still live in the neighborhood today.” The filmmaker highlights that he is happy to be able to show his original work and show it to local residents first.

Ortiz worked for a period as an editor at TV Bandeirantes, worked in production companies and now works in arts management, as a designer and in computer graphics work. But his passion, he reveals, is editing journalistic videos. Therefore, when he learned about the history of the neighborhood and decided to recover the memories, he considered it “a journalistic bonus, it wasn’t even a job, but a pleasure”. The documentary was directed by Juninho Ortiz, images and production by Cláudio Doretto, monitoring by historian Américo Vilella and support by camera operators Genésio Ruiz and Zeca Filho.’
