Understand why the Guarani stadium is present in the documentary about the tragedy at Ninho do Urubu

The Princess’s Golden Earring, Guarani Futebol Clube’s stadium, appeared on one of the covers of the home page of the documentary series “Ninho: Futebol e Tragédia”, which premiered on February 14, on Netflix.

The production tells the story of the tragic fire that fatally killed 10 Flamengo academy players, in February 2019.

But why is the Golden Earring in the series? For those who watch, it is already discovered at the beginning of the first episode: one of the survivors, Filipe Chrysman, worked at Guarani when the production recorded his statement. His interview was even conducted in the Brinco stands.

One day before the premiere, when searching for the word “Ninho” on Netflix, Brinco de Ouro was on one of the covers. This image, after repercussion on social media, was no longer seen.

The player commented on the contact for the interviews and also on the day of recording. “As far as I know, Guarani agreed to make the documentary without success. It was monitored by Victor Rede, press officer at the time of Guarani. He helped us a lot. He participated in some filming, but ended up not appearing in the documentary”, said Filipe.

During the three episodes of production, the images shown of the stadium were limited to the steps where the conversation with the player, who was part of the Bugrino professional squad in 2023, took place.

Another question raised is: why is the aerial image of the Bugre stadium on the cover of the documentary series about a tragedy that happened at the Flamengo Training Center, in Rio de Janeiro? The matter even became a topic of discussion on social media, where fans questioned why it was used.

The documentary’s director, Pedro Asbeg, commented that his role is to decide what will be shown. “In relation to publicity and these matters (cover, synopsis) it is up to the Netflix team.

When questioned, Netflix’s advisors limited themselves to saying that they did not comment on internal processes.

Guarani was contacted through its advisors, but, until the completion of this report, it did not take a position.

The production

“Ninho: Futebol e Tragédia” is a documentary series that aired on February 14th on Netflix. With three episodes, the production directed by Asbeg features testimonies from the victims’ families, the testimony of one of the survivors, Filipe Chrysman, and also other actors involved, such as journalists who, at the time, in addition to covering the tragedy, also followed the investigation, which resulted in emails showing that Flamengo’s management was aware of the risks of keeping the container that ended up being set on fire in the way it was.

Regarding contact with Guarani, director Pedro Asbeg revealed that Campinas was a kind of “hub” to talk to survivors he had managed to contact. “We spoke to boys who at the time were at RB Bragantino, at XV de Piracicaba, in Franca. So, Luana Rocha, one of the screenwriters, and I left for Campinas,” he explained.

And it was in the city that Pedro interviewed one of the main characters for the documentary: Filipe. The player has been at Guarani since mid-2021, when he was on the under-20 squad. He stayed until 2023.

“The Filipon [como Pedro o chama] it is a amazing boy. We talked to him for over a year before he agreed to talk to us. He gave a very sincere statement, he is a golden boy”, commented Asbeg.

“An advisor was with us throughout the process. It was delicate, we had already talked and he already knew that we would talk about the tragedy, the day in question”, he continued commenting on the contact with the player and also on the Bugrino club’s participation in the documentary.

The documentary received some criticism that it was made to “clear Flamengo’s record”, however, anyone who watches it with their eyes wide open knows that the production was not in that direction.

“There are many people who use this tragedy to fuel rivalry, I know the families, I know how they were expecting the production. All the reviews were positive regarding the series, I am very happy with the end of a three-year process, it is a mixture of feelings, relief, happiness, pride, expectation”, said Asbeg.

Finally, the director also revealed that he hopes his production will have an impact on people and especially on the justice system.

“We always do our work focusing on making a difference. Whether it’s a Flamengo fan who had a critical point of view, or a fan of another team who stops using the situation as a provocation, or mainly speeds up justice and finds out who was responsible for the deaths. It’s been 5 years and we need to know, families need to know. I want to believe that it will be useful for this”, he concluded.

Filipe in Campinas

The main character of the documentary series “Ninho: Futebol e Tragédia” is Filipe Chrysman. The player is one of the survivors of the fire that hit a container used as a dormitory for players at Flamengo’s base in 2019.

His testimony talks about moments from that week (the fire happened on a Thursday, February 8), about the night’s sleep, about the days following the tragedy, but mainly about the terror experienced in the early hours of the morning, when the fire started.

Filipe gave his interview in the stands of the Princess’s Golden Earring. He arrived in Campinas in 2021, aged 19. The player was hired for the Bugre base. “In my first six months I wasn’t used much. It took me a while to adapt to the team and everything in the new city”, said Filipe. Guarani e Campinas had been his first experience outside Flamengo after the tragedy.

In the 2022 season, already adapted, the striker was one of the team’s highlights, which led him to the professional squad at the end of the year. “They told me that I had only gone up to train with the professionals because there had been some error regarding my contract, that I wouldn’t be able to play in the Copinha in January 2023,” he revealed.

He was listed for some Paulistão games in 2023 and made his debut in stoppage time of the game against Botafogo de Ribeirão Preto.

Today at Central de Pernambuco, the player reveals that continuing to try to be a professional player after what happened at Ninho do Urubu was not easy. “I lost count of how many days of doubt there were, but in the end I always turned the key and gained the strength to continue. God, my family and people who really care about me did not abandon me at this difficult time in my life, I am very grateful. It was a time when I got a little into in depression”, he confessed.

Regarding this last topic, Filipe also thanked the professionals who helped him. “During my time at Guarani, at the end of 2022 or beginning of 2023, I don’t remember exactly, I started receiving psychological support from André Luís Aroni. He helped me with a lot of issues, even though a lot of the time I didn’t want to talk about it. [risos]. My special accompaniment was this like everyone else’s, but André was there and had time for me, which is what matters” he said.

Depression hit the player soon after the tragedy. There he also reveals that Flamengo contacted psychologists to accompany the survivors of the tragedy. “I also had good help from Joseane, a psychologist at the time.”

Filipe was reluctant to participate in the documentary. The team spoke with the player for more than a year until he agreed to give his statement.

“It was very difficult, but I managed to deal with the situation well. I didn’t know anything about Flamengo receiving notifications, and that they were all signed by the presidency. Notifications about irregularities within the CT, and mainly about the container that was not authorized to be placed there. On Tuesday [dois dias antes da tragédia] One of the air conditioners had failed, so people went to fix it and put it back in place. The post-tragedy disregard they gave to the families of those who were lost was disgusting, shameful and very sad. Anyway… today I opened my eyes after this documentary and I know the situation they put us in.

Filipe’s continuity in football after everything that happened demonstrates that the dream of thousands of Brazilians is one of the strongest things that exist in this country.

“Since I was little, I dreamed of being a professional football player. I continue for myself, for my family and for the 10 who are gone. I really believe that I have a purpose in my life, God didn’t wake me up [no dia da tragédia] for no reason”, he concluded.
