Al Pacino and Robin Williams team up in this gripping thriller.

Christopher Nolan, recently awarded the Oscar for Best Director, is the mind behind classics such as The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar and the acclaimed Oppenheimer – which also won a golden statuette. The director is also responsible for the excellent and almost forgotten Insomnia, led by Al Pacino and Robin Williams.

Released in cinemas in 2002, the film tells the story of Will Dormer (Pacino), a seasoned and disillusioned cop sent deep into Alaska to investigate the murder of a teenage girl. After accidentally killing his partner, he becomes the victim of blackmail orchestrated by the killer, played by Williams.

Remake of a Norwegian film made in 1997 with Stellan Skarsgård in the lead role, Insomnia confirmed Nolan’s brilliance two years after Amnesia. The film’s polar atmosphere is fascinating and, above all, the performances of Al Pacino and an unconventional Robin Williams are impressive.

One of Nolan’s “most personal” films

“The reality is that it is one of my most personal films due to the experience of making it. It was a very significant period in my life”, says the director in the book The Nolan Variations, written by Tom Shone.

Even though the film often ends up forgotten amid Christopher Nolan’s impressive works, Insomnia remains well above the average of everything that can be done in the cinematic scene – viewers of I love cinema They weren’t wrong when they gave it an average rating of 3.9 stars out of 5.

Insomnia is available on Telecine (via Globoplay) and on Prime Video premium subscription.
