With a gross of 960 million dollars and more than six months of showing in theaters, it was clear that many viewers liked Oppenheimer, a film that earned Christopher Nolan his first Oscar for Best Director.

However, long before his most successful film hit theaters, Nolan had the opportunity to show it to someone very special to him. And the first spectator of Oppenheimernot counting those responsible for the studio, was none other than Steven Spielberg himself.

According to Christopher Nolan in statements to the Associated Press last February, Spielberg’s screening formally occurred by chance: the veteran director had called Nolan to talk about something that had nothing to do with Oppenheimer — and, at the same time, the 70 mm copies of the film arrived. Quite an opportunity!

“When I got the 70mm print, I showed it to Steven Spielberg,” Nolan said in a joint conversation with Dune director Denis Villeneuve. He called me to talk about something else and I had also just received the copy and hadn’t shown it to anyone. It was an extraordinary experience.”

And what did Steven Spielberg think of Oppenheimer? Well, the response was very positive. “He said some very beautiful things, but the best thing was watching him watch it. He told me he loved it. I shouldn’t have even seen it with him, but seeing the great master watching it was something irresistible”, concluded the filmmaker.
