Ultraman fires his famous beam that splits monsters in half

There’s no way around it, people like to see giant creatures on the screen destroying cities, crushing people and causing tsunamis. Proof of this is the highly successful debut of Godzilla and Kong: The New Empirewhich grossed more than $80 million in the United States.

I’m not even here discussing the virtues of this film with the two monsters — but rather, the level of chaos only increases as the minutes go by — because that doesn’t seem to matter much. As long as the effects are good and Godzilla and Kong are well done, the theaters will be packed simply because it’s so cool to see them destroying everything in front of them.

So, isn’t it time for Hollywood to make a movie — or several — about Ultraman and his famous family?

I made this modest suggestion on

Well, that’s true. There are many American adaptations of Japanese brands that were catastrophes. Remember the long Dragon Ball with real actors? So it is. Godzilla himself had a bad time in the 1998 film.

On the other hand, Hollywood has already gotten it right a few times with Japanese characters. Just look at the many critical acclaim for the recent Godzilla Minus Onewhich even won the Oscar for Special Effects this year.

Thus, the impression this columnist has is that an American adaptation of Ultraman is the natural next step in this wave of rescue of gigantic beings. The story is great, there is a whole mythology around Ultraman, Ultraseven and their family of space warriors. Furthermore, current technology allows us to recreate the hero and his enemy monsters in a masterful way. Not to mention that there are almost 60 years of material ready to be released into the cinema. It is possible to create sagas and more sagas with Ultra.

Other than that, Ultraman remains very popular. In 2021, for example, Marvel Comics launched the miniseries The Rise of Ultraman in the United States, with a cover designed by Alex Ross. It was launched here in Brazil too, where the giant warriors also have a good fan base.

See, the production company Tsuburaya, owner of the Ultraman brand, releases feature films with a certain frequency. The character and his lineage are not forgotten in limbo, waiting for someone to rediscover them, but a Hollywood film, made with all the pomp and circumstance it deserves, could generate a new global fever around these Japanese heroes.

I don’t see why not do it.
