The Minister of Internal Affairs agrees that military service could be an alternative for young people who commit “minor crimes”.

The idea was defended by Nuno Melo, Minister of National Defense and leader of the CDS, with the argument that military service would be an alternative to institutions that, “in most cases, only function as a school of crime for life” .

Margarida Blasco said, cited by the Lusa agency, that the Minister of Defense “spoke on behalf of the entire government” and admitted that it is necessary to find solutions and “adapt them to the current contexts that are very demanding”.

At Universidade Europa, a PSD political training initiative, Nuno Melo stated, this weekend, that “there are no political conditions” to re-impose Mandatory Military Service, but admitted that military service could be an alternative for young people who commit petty crimes.

The minister argued that these young people could be “much better citizens” if they were given the opportunity to “perform military service” and have access to “an exercise in training, authority” and “values”.
