Peter Jackson continued the adaptation of The Lord of the Rings and look what happened.

Despite achieving a perfect trilogy with his adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson still wanted to return to Middle Earth with more adaptations. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug wasn’t one of the most beloved of his second trilogy, but it’s worth checking out.

In the film, having successfully crossed the mountains to get close to their destination, Thorin and company must ask a powerful stranger for help before entering Mirkwood, which is full of surprises and dangers. Plus, Gandalf won’t go with them, so they need to be doubly cautious.

When Guillermo del Toro was left out of the project to adapt The Hobbit for the big screen, it was the already experienced Peter Jackson who took on the task of transforming Tolkien’s novel into another trilogy of films. Of course, it was questioned from the beginning whether the original book was enough for three films, and the final result confirmed those doubts.

Peter Jackson refused to make a shocking change to The Lord of the Rings from Tolkien’s books, despite pressure from producers

The Desolation of Smaug presents similar problems to the other two films that accompany it. Some very specific passages in the book had to be extended to almost three hours. And, in general, less careful work can be seen due to the imbalance of digital effects compared to previous features.

Actors like Ian McKellen openly expressed their frustration with a filming process and result that was far from the magic of the previous trilogy. Experimentation with technology, which replaced the traditional 24 frames per second with 48, was also an aspect criticized by many.

Anyway, to draw your own conclusions, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is available in the Prime Video catalog.
