In 2014, “Frozen” co-director Chris Buck confirmed one of Disney’s most discussed theories about the relationship between Tarzan, Elsa and Anna

Within the Disney universe, it is extremely common for fans to create the most creative theories in order to justify facts that were not so well elaborated in the films, or just to try to link one work to another, uniting the films into a large shared world.

Among the most popular theories are those that point to some supposed kinship between the characters. A great example of a very famous thesis among fans, and with a great justification, is that Ariel, from “The Little Mermaid”, and Hercules, from the self-titled film, would be second cousins.

The hypothesis is mainly based on Greek mythology. This is because, according to the tales of Ancient Greece, King Triton, Ariel’s father, is the son of the great god of the seas Poseidon, who, in turn, is the brother of Zeus, god of gods, thunder and the heavens, and father of Hercules.

Therefore, analyzing the family’s genealogical tree, it is possible to conclude that Triton is a direct cousin of Hercules, making his seven daughters, the princesses Ariel, Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista and Andrina, second cousins of the demigod.

Although the theory has a strong basis, it was never officially confirmed by Disney. However, another thesis that was highly doubted by some fans, ended up being proven by one of the studio’s directors.

Heirs of Arendelle?

The hypothesis in question says that, before dying in a shipwreck, the parents of Elsa and Anna, from “Frozen”, would have had a boy, who survived the tragic accident and ended up being raised by monkeys: Tarzan. The thesis arose after some fans noticed the physical similarity between the parents of the princesses of Arendelle and the parents of the king of the jungle, in addition to both having been victims of shipwrecks.

In 2014, during an interview with MTV (via Capricho), the co-director of “Frozen”, Chris Buckconfirmed that, for him, the theory is in fact true, and that Elsa, Anna and Tarzan are siblings who never had the chance to meet each other.

“I think me and Jennifer Lee [co-diretora de ‘Frozen’] we were going to a meeting and I started telling her the whole story. I said, ‘Of course Anna and Elsa’s parents didn’t die. Yes, they were shipwrecked, but they were at sea a little longer than we expected because their mother was pregnant and she gave birth on the boat to a boy. The shipwreck happened and somehow they were taken far away from the Scandinavian sea, and ended up in a jungle. They built a tree house and a leopard killed them, so their son was raised by a gorilla,’” she explained. “In my head, Anna and Elsa are Tarzan’s sisters. This is my fun world. Whatever people want to believe, they believe.”

Despite the director’s speech, to this day, many fans still doubt the veracity of the theory. Anyway, Buck highlights from the interview that “whatever people want to believe, go ahead. If you want to unite them all, do so. That’s the Disney spirit.”
