Jennifer Lopez faces Artificial Intelligence in Netflix sci-fi

Netflix released the poster and trailer for “Atlas”, a sci-fi film starring Jennifer Lopez. The preview has lots of explosions, diving into space and fighting Artificial Intelligence, but mainly presents a live-action premise of seinen mecha – robot anime piloted by humans.

In the plot, an artificial intelligence (played by Simu Liu, from “Barbie”) decides that the only way to end wars in the world is to extinguish humanity. And to win the battle against this enemy, Lopez’s character will have to seek alliance with something she doesn’t trust: a second artificial intelligence in her mecha suit, supposedly with good intentions.

The story of the computer that decides to eliminate humanity is far from new, having been used as the premise of several science fiction films since “Colossus 1980”, released in 1970, when supercomputers were introduced during the Cold War. But the arrival of the era of domestic AIs revived the genre with a vengeance last year – AI was a villain in “Mission: Impossible”, “Agent Stone” and other productions.

The film is written by Aron Eli Coleite (creator of “Locke & Key”) and directed by Brad Peyton (“Rampage: Total Destruction”).

The premiere takes place on May 24th.
