Civil War is showing in theaters, Alex Garland’s new film starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny. The director caught attention exactly 10 years ago with his sci-fi masterpiece Ex_Machina: Artificial Instinct.

Launched in 2014, Ex_Machina stars Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander and Oscar Isaac and is available in the Netflix catalog. The film won over critics, with a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects – also nominated in the category of Best Original Screenplay, written by Garland himself.

In Ex_Machina: Artificial Instinct, Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a young computer programmer, wins a competition at the company where he works to spend a week at the home of Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), the brilliant and reclusive president of the company. Upon his arrival, Caleb realizes that he was chosen to participate in a test with Nathan’s latest creation: Ava (Alicia Vikander), a robot with artificial intelligence. But this creature appears sophisticated and seductive in a way that no one could have predicted, complicating the situation to the point that Caleb no longer knows who to trust.

Ex_Machina: Artificial Instinct was his directorial debut in 2014 and Garland also directed Annihilation (2018), the series Devs (2020), Men – Faces of Fear (2022) and, of course, Civil War.

Civil War takes place in the not-so-distant future, when a civil war breaks out in the United States. A pioneering team of war journalists travels across the country to record the scale and situation of a violent scenario that took to the streets in a rapid escalation, involving the entire nation. However, the job turns into a war of survival when they too become the target.
