Despite good reviews, Guillermo del Toro’s 2021 film was a genuine commercial disaster.

Released in 2021, Nightmare Alley is one of Guillermo del Toro’s most recent films, and is also nominated for the 2022 Oscar in four categories: Best Film, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Cinematography. Unfortunately, the feature film didn’t take home any trophies, but it was still an interesting title.

Directed by the acclaimed Mexican filmmaker and starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, Nightmare Alley was applauded and well-reviewed by critics. In addition to an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, its four Oscar nominations confirm its relevance.

However, on the other hand, the public’s reception was not so warm, as some viewers complained about the length of the film, which was too long at two and a half hours. Another point highlighted was the slow pace of the plot, not being up to par with his previous project, The Shape of Water, a production that earned the director his first statuette for Best Film at the 90th edition of the Oscar held in 2018.

Dedicated to his series Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, on Netflix, and other work as a producer and screenwriter, Del Toro took a long time to return to the big screen after winning his first Oscar, but despite the good reception and praise, his feature film 2021 had a poor box office performance, being considered a commercial failure. With a budget of 60 million dollars and a collection that did not reach 40 million, the numbers speak for themselves.

A noir from the 1940s

Set in the late 1930s in the United States, Nightmare Alley is an adaptation of the 1946 literary classic written by William Lindsay Gresham. The story features Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), a conman who uses his talent for manipulation to pull off scams.

Guillermo del Toro added a special touch to the grotesque scene of a “new” streaming hit

After losing everything, he joins a “circus of horrors” where he manages to improve his skills and become one of the most famous attractions, becoming known as “The Great Staton”. However, things start to change when a mysterious psychiatrist named Lillith (Cate Blanchett) crosses his path and tries to expose his fraudulent abilities.
