In an industry saturated with franchise sequels and reboots, Joe and Anthony Russo, best known for their work on Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame, are trying to chart a new course. In a recent interview with GamesRadar, the Russo brothers expressed their desire to create their own cinematic universe, similar to the cultural phenomenon that is Star Wars. Drawing inspiration from their success with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the filmmakers aim to pioneer the creation of original stories that inject fresh energy into the moviegoing experience and inspire future filmmakers.

Speaking to GamesRadar, Joe Russo highlighted the importance of prioritizing originality and innovativeness in the narrative. Joe highlighted the success of his recent projects, such as Extraction 3 and The Gray Man 2, as proof of the public’s appetite for new and compelling narratives. With streaming platforms offering a new avenue for event-worthy content, the Russo brothers see an opportunity to captivate audiences with their unique vision.

“The intention is to build our own Star Wars. For us, it’s all about focusing on the original narrative and new ideas. If there’s anything we’ve done, it’s too much. I mean, I guess you could say we’re in a rut of repetitive stories and potential abuses of franchises. So at a certain point, I think the public is hungry for new ideas and new stories, and that’s where all our attention after Marvel is – asking “what are those?” new stories? Barbie and Oppenheimer showed that the public wants something different,” revealed Joe Russo.

Before their foray into blockbuster cinema, the Russo brothers perfected their art on television, notably with series such as “Arrested Development” and “Community”. Thanks to their distinct personality and creative ability, they gained a base of dedicated admirers and were critically applauded. Now, as they venture beyond the Marvel universe, the duo is ready to explore new horizons with a slate of exciting projects in development.

While details remain thin on his next releases, including Citadel sequels and spinoffs and modern reinterpretations of classic films like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Thomas Crown Affair,” one thing is right: the Russo brothers are determined to broaden the creative horizon and give cinema a new direction.
