Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi reveals the definitive songs from the Ozzy and Dio eras

The legendary British Heavy Metal band Black Sabbath has featured several vocalists throughout its brilliant (and eventful) history. The two most famous of these singers are Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio, who recorded some of Sabbath’s best songs, such as “Paranoid”, “Iron Man”, “Children Of The Grave”, “Heaven And Hell”, “Neon Knights” and “TV Crimes”.

Guitarist Tony Iommi, founder of Black Sabbath, gave an interview to the Songfacts website in March 2021 and was invited to name the definitive songs from the Ozzy and Dio eras.

“I always identify with ‘Black Sabbath’. And ‘Iron Man’. A lot of people say ‘Paranoid,’ but that song was written to fill the album – it was never intended to be anything else. But it became a single because it was a song short, and because it became what it became, most people knew us because of ‘Paranoid’ at that time,” Iommi said, referring to Ozzy’s definitive recorded songs.

As for the definitive Sabbath theme recorded by Dio, Iommi chose the track that gives its name to the first album that the late vocalist recorded with the group.

“I think ‘Heaven And Hell,’ because it was on our first album, and that track has stood the test of time. Even Ronnie, when he went solo, would always play ‘Heaven And Hell.’ popular”, reported the greatest riff creator of all time.

Ozzy Osbourne is the original lead singer of Black Sabbath and has recorded nine studio albums with the group (the first eight and “13”). Ronnie James Dio, chosen as Ozzy’s replacement, had two stints with Sabbath and recorded the albums “Heaven And Hell”, “Mob Rules” and “Dehumanizer”.
