What’s the reason we like sad music?

This question has intrigued researchers for a long time. According to data present in the research in question, between 25% and 50% of people reported that most of the songs they like generate a feeling of sadness. So the natural question is: why do people like listening to music that arouses bad feelings?

To answer this, a test was carried out with 50 participants who chose songs of their choice. They were then asked to imagine what it would be like to hear that song “removing” the feeling of melancholy. The majority were able to do this mental exercise and 82% of participants revealed that it would not be as pleasurable to listen to music without the feeling of sadness.

Differences between sadness and commotion

However, Professor Emery Schubert, author of the study from the Laboratory of Empirical Musicology at the University of New South Wales in Australia, points out an interesting reason for this. In a press release, the theorist revealed that some previous studies postulate that sadness is part of the feeling of commotion that the song brings.

According to Schubert, the previous analyzes refer to a so-called indirect effect hypothesis. According to this line, people feel sadness as part of another feeling, commotion, which brings a mixture of good and bad sensations. The professor points out that research carried out by defenders of this thesis reveals that sadness and commotion overlap.

In this way, it is possible to say that it is a cycle: “sadness brings commotion and commotion brings sadness”, says the scholar.

Research limitations

However, this study published in Plos One has its limitations. This is because asking participants to choose songs that they love and find sad at the same time can give a clue as to what the test is about and bias participants. Knowing this, Professor Emery Schubert said in the statement what he and his team did to mitigate the problem.

“We did not mention the objective of the research during recruitment, we screened the selected excerpts and controlled the conditions”, points out the author.
