Sporting broke a long fast against Benfica: the numbers from the volleyball derby – Volleyball

Lions beat Eagles 3-0 in the 14th and final round of Series A of the championship

Sporting won 3-0 this Saturday against Benfica at Pavilhão João Rocha, in the 14th round of the 2nd phase of the National Championship (Serie A), a result that does not change the final classification and the title playoff pairing, as it was already defined before this round. The eagles had already secured first place and the lions second.

This was the eighth time that Sporting beat Benfica since the lions’ return to the sport, from which they were absent 29 years after Pedro Santana Lopes’ management put an end to several high-competition sports in 1995.

On the other hand, it was the third defeat that Benfica suffered against Sporting since the arrival of Brazilian coach, Marcel Matz, to the Eagles in 2018/2019. The last defeat occurred in the Portuguese Cup final of the 2020/2021 season, when the lions won 3-1 against Benfica, in Santo Tirso.

In other words, since March 7, 2021, Sporting had not beaten Benfica. A three-year fast was broken this afternoon, with the Leonine victory at Pavilhão João Rocha.

Since the 2017/2018 season, which saw Sporting’s return to the sport, there have been 40 derbies, with the Lions winning eight times, including this afternoon’s game.
