The SPED initiative will include several episodes in the areas of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy. According to Susana Lopes, president of SPED, “with the creation of this podcast we intend to address, throughout the episodes, topics related to digestive health and the main gastroenterological diseases, such as colorectal cancer”. “We want, in a simple and didactic way, to answer questions and promote information through audio content, which can be listened to anywhere and at any time of the day”.
And he adds: “SPED intends to contribute to the population’s health literacy. In this sense, it is in a clear and stigma-free way that the population will be able to hear experts in the field talking about diseases, symptoms, risk factors, treatments, but also about forms of prevention and strategies to promote digestive health.”
The first episode of the podcast “Endoscopically speaking”, concerns the topic “The importance of colorectal cancer screening” and features Catarina Fidalgo, Gastroenterologist at Hospital Beatriz Ângelo, and Sónia Araújo, presenter on RTP.
SPED also warns that, at an early stage, colorectal cancer may not cause symptoms, which is why it is so important that screenings are carried out. When symptoms appear, the most common are: blood loss in the stool; prolonged change in the usual pattern of your bowel function; abdominal pain; fatigue; unexplained weight loss.
