The sale of the network, which gives access to 6 million homes, is expected to be announced later this week, according to Expánsion. The deal is expected to be worth around 900 million euros.

A Digi is finalizing the final details for the sale of part of the fiber optic network in Spain to the Australian Macquarie fund. The sale of the network, which provides access to 6 million homes, especially in large cities, should be announced later this week, Expánsion said this Monday.

The Spanish newspaper states that the deal is expected to be worth around 900 million euros, a value above that indicated by CincoDías last Thursday (600 million).

The Romanian operator will remain the main customer of the fiber optic network, but the value of the sale to Onivia, which is owned by Macquarie and Abrdn, will allow the group to amortize debt and finance growth in Spain, with investment in spectrum and mobile network. Initially, Digi considered selling the entire fiber optic network in the neighboring country, reaching 9 million homesbut ended up backing down on the decision, keeping a part under its control.

The operator has been strengthening its position in the Spanish market and in February this year it ended up being the major beneficiary of the merger between MásMóvil and Orange, with the remedies presented by the companies including the provision of spectrum to the Romanian Digi. The sale to Macquarie will, in fact, make it possible to obtain enough money to pay for the spectrum acquired, according to local media.

Macquarie has been shopping for fixed networks in the Spanish telecommunications market since the beginning of last year, having been appointed in February 2023 as one of the investment funds in the race for Vodafone’s fiber optic network in Spain.
