Israeli embassy in Lisbon receives suspicious envelope, PSP did not find explosives

The Israeli Embassy in Lisbon received a “suspicious envelope” on Tuesday night, the Israeli diplomatic mission in Portugal announced via Twitter.

“The Israeli Embassy received a suspicious envelope this evening. The PSP was called to the scene to investigate what happened. All Embassy staff are safe”, the publication reads.

To Expresso, an official source from the Lisbon Metropolitan Command, says that the agents sent to the embassy confirmed that the envelope “contained an unknown product”, and that is why a team specializing in explosives was called to the scene, a PSP source confirmed.

A source from the Metropolitan Command told Lusa, at 00:30 this Wednesday, that, after the investigations, no explosives were found.

The team assigned to the embassy has already left the premises and the case has been passed to the Judiciary Police (PJ), added the same source. There are no reports of injuries.

The PSP confirmed that the explosives deactivation team was sent to the embassy at 11:20 pm on Tuesday, due to a suspicious substance received in an envelope.

To Lusa, a source from the security force said that “an embassy employee thought it was strange that this substance came in an envelope, so he decided to hand it over to the embassy security services, who later also found it suspicious”.

The news had been reported by CNN Portugal, which stated that the Embassy had received an envelope, originating in France, which contained black powder inside and an allusion to Palestine.
