Around 219 thousand people took to the streets in Lisbon this April 25th to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. The information is provided by PSE, a data analysis consultancy that studies mobility.

The number represents around 3% of the Portuguese population over 15 years old, writes the consultant in a statement, and is more than double that recorded in 2023. Since 2021, at least, the number of people celebrating the 25th of April in Lisbon has always increased: 33,883 Portuguese in 2021, 90,901 in 2022 and 104,664 in 2022.

For reference, the number of people celebrating in Lisbon is close to 40% of the population of the entire municipality (544,851 inhabitants) and a higher number than the population of the municipality of Cascais, for example.

Among those who took to the streets to celebrate democracy and freedom, just over half were men (53%). “The biggest differentiating factor” among those present, explains the consultant, was school education. While 62% of these had higher education, 29% had secondary education and only 6% had basic education.

The most represented age group was people aged 55 or over (44% of celebrants). Next are young people between 15 and 34 years old (34%) and the age group between 35 and 54 years old, the least represented (22%).

The count carried out by PSE is limited to “the number of people who walked on foot in the Marquês de Pombal, Avenida da Liberdade and Praça do Rossio areas”. The study sample is made up of 3670 individuals over 15 years old, residing in the regions of Greater Lisbon, Greater Porto, North and Center Coasts and the district of Faro. The data was collected via GPS. The study’s margin of error is 1.62%, for a 95% confidence interval.
