Almost 219 thousand people were in Lisbon to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, estimates PSE, a data analysis consultancy that studies the mobility of the Portuguese population. 218,973 people walked in the Marquês de Pombal, Avenida da Liberdade and Praça do Rossio areas, according to data released this Tuesday.

The value represents “practically 3% of the population aged 15 and over” and “more than double that seen in the previous year”, when the PSE counted a total of 104,664 people. The number of participants in celebrating the date in the capital has been increasing since the beginning of the analysis: in 2021 there were 33,883 and, in the following year, 90,901.

Returning to data from 2024, the total is made up of 53% men and 47% women. The “greatest differentiation” factor was school education: 62% of those who marked the date on the streets of Lisbon had higher education, 29% secondary education and 6% basic education. “This profile reflects that the population is much more educated than the national average, in the composition of protesters and celebrants of this date”, the document reads.

Regarding distribution in terms of social class, the consultant details that “all classes were well represented”, but the middle class had “greater relative weight”, with 66%. Regarding ages, 44% of those present were 55 or over, 34% between 15 and 34 and 22% between 35 and 54.

The analysis concludes that the participants “belong to a highly educated and informed segment of the population, relatively young, especially middle class, characteristics that are also quite common in the urban population residing in the metropolitan region of Lisbon”.

The study sample is made up of 3670 individuals “representative of the universe” over 15 years old, residing in the regions of Greater Lisbon, Greater Porto, North Coast, Central Coast and district of Faro. PSE data collection is carried out continuously through location monitoring, which involves installing an application on the participants’ cell phones. The work’s margin of error is 1.62% for a 95% confidence interval.
