During a return trip from Angola, after having accompanied the Prime Minister, Bernardo suffered two convulsions in mid-flight, which required several emergency maneuversand a decision considered risky.
“On the return [da viagem], I was at the airport writing an article for Expresso, and at a certain point I wasn’t able to load the letters that my head was thinking. (…) I tried to compose myself, I got on the plane, I sat down (…) but the discomfort returned and I became a little more worried when I tried to grab the headphones“, describes the journalist.
“I got up to go to the bathroom, and from then on I didn’t know anything else, I blacked out.“, account.
Bernardo Ferrão even had two seizures, mid-flight, and guarantees that the situation ended up ‘going well’ due to the presence of an Angolan doctor on the plane.
“At the second convulsion she said: ‘The plane has to stop, we really have to land otherwise this person dies here‘. We landed in Ghana, and now I just wake up getting slapped in the face“.
“At the hospital, they immediately gave me an MRI, and then a ball appeared in the brain (…) there was the question of what that was (…) and then the decision, taken by Filipa together with Ricardo Costa, of whether Bernardo is coming or not‘.
The journalist confessed to having taken the risk of boarding a plane again, heading to Portugal, despite “all risks“. “I had the notion of finitude [da vida]”, he also described.
