Former Brazilian international remains detained pending bail of one million euros

Sentenced to four years and six months in prison for sexually abusing a young girl in a Barcelona nightclub, Dani Alves saw the Barcelona Court grant him conditional release while the appeals (his and the victim’s defense, which is asking for a substantially greater sentence) ) are evaluated by the Spanish Court, upon payment of a bond of one million euros and delivery of Brazilian and Spanish passports.

The Brazilian has still not been able to pay bail and even Neymar’s father, who contributed 150,000 euros to mitigate the sentence, publicly refused further help. In order to be released on parole, Dani Alves has to pay it by 3pm in Spain, which did not happen this Friday, meaning the player will spend another weekend in detention.

In the last few hours, Dinorah Santana, mother of the player’s two children, reacted to the case, calling the former Brazilian international «Judas», in a post on social media.

Furthermore, it is because of a legal dispute with his ex-wife that the player cannot use the large fortune he has in Brazil to pay bail. Dani Alves’ assets in his home country are valued at 60 million euros, but his bank accounts are frozen, which makes it impossible for him to move money: the legal fight with his ex-wife is related to the payment of alimony for the two children they have in common.

In Spain, the former Barcelona player has two bank accounts, both with access frozen since the rape conviction: one with 50 thousand euros, the other with a negative balance of 20 thousand euros. Also a long way from covering the million euros needed to leave prison.
