As long as he feels useful, the Argentine will continue
At 36 years old, Lionel Messi is more than used to questions about the end of his career. He doesn’t know when it will be, nor what he will do next.
In an interview with Big Time Podcast, he was asked about the dreams he still has to fulfill, after being World Champion in 2022. «In the sporting field, I was lucky enough to make all my dreams come true and the truth is that I can’t ask more. I try to take advantage of everything God has given me so far, which is a lot,” he said.
When I feel it’s time to take that step, I’ll take it without thinking about age
And there are 43 titles including the World Cup, Copa América, Olympic Games, and the Champions League with Barcelona.
The Inter Miami player spoke about what he feels needs to happen to make the final decision: «I know that the moment I feel like I can’t perform, that I’m no longer having fun or helping my teammates, it’s time. I’m very self-critical of myself, I know when I’m good, when I’m bad, when I’m playing well and when I’m playing badly.
Age will not be a decisive factor, but physical capacity will be: «When I feel it is time to take that step, I will take it without thinking about age. If I feel good I’ll try to continue competing, because it’s what I like and what I know how to do.”
And then? «I haven’t thought about it yet, I try to enjoy everyday life, the moments, without thinking about the future. I don’t have anything defined yet, I hope to continue playing for a while longer, which is what I like. When the time comes I will surely find the way.”
«PSG, a change I wasn’t looking for»
The Argentine once again recalled his hasty departure from Barcelona to PSG: «It was a difficult change when I went to PSG, because I was doing very well at Barcelona and I thought about staying. I wasn’t ready to leave, it all happened very quickly, I had to rebuild my life from one day to the next. I discovered another league, another club, a new locker room. It was a change I wasn’t looking for, so it was difficult at first.”
