P. Ferreira-AVS, 0-4: return to victories reignites discussion for promotion – 2nd League

Jorge Costa’s team remains equal on points with Nacional and two behind leader Santa Clara

AVS returned to winning ways today and moved back into second place, beating Paços de Ferreira 4-0, with a brace from Mercado, at the end of the 31st round of the II Football League.

In the table, AVS equaled the 62 points of the second Nacional, with an advantage in the direct confrontation, replacing the five points for the pursuer Marítimo. Paços de Ferreira, in turn, lost again nine rounds later and fell to sixth, with 45.

AVS, with three defeats in the last four games, was prohibited from slipping up and the team, even without Nené, came out determined, superior to Paços in the first half.

The team led by Jorge Costa spent more time in the opposite half and took the lead, in the 28th minute, in a move in which Mercado crossed from the right and Luís Silva, in the Pacense area, cushioned the ball for Talles Wander, Nené’s replacement, to finish.

Costinha and Welton Jr. came on for the hosts at the start of the second half, but the immediate gains went to AVS, who scored the second, in the 53rd minute, with a reload from Mercado, after teammate Stênio, in the previous attack, had wasted a open goal.

Paços conceded the goal, did not react and conceded the third, in the 65th minute, again by Mercado, pushing the ball in a quality individual play by Stênio, after Alaba had headed the ‘iron’ of the Pacense goal, following a corner.

Pablo, in the 75th minute, had the best opportunity of the game for the locals, but it would be the outsiders who scored, in the 81st minute, in a move from the bench, with Tunde crossing for Yair Mena’s header, fixing the final result.
