Intel confirmed, during an artificial intelligence conference in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, that the Microsoft Copilot AI service will soon run directly on the PC without the need to perform cloud processing.

The information was confirmed by Intel executives in a conversation with the Tom’s Hardware website during the event in the Taiwanese capital. According to the chipmaker’s representatives, Microsoft requested a performance of 40 TOPS (trillion operations per second) for the Neural Processing Units (NPUs) that should equip the new generation of AI PCs.

Processing on AI PCs

Currently, all requests and commands sent to Microsoft Copilot are processed in the cloud — which results in some delay in getting responses from the AI, regardless of the size of the task.

With the next generation of PCs equipped with artificial intelligence, AI PCs, computers will be able to run elements locally without the need to connect to remote servers over the internet.

Recent rumors already suggested that Microsoft wanted a processing capacity of 40 TOPS in AI PCs, which Intel now confirms at the event in Taiwan.

However, no processor currently available on the market has this capability. The highest NPU speed is from the Apple M3 with 18 TOPS, followed by AMD’s Ryzen 8040 and 7040 laptop chips with 16 and 10 TOPS respectively.

According to Tom’s Hardware, Intel stated that it is already working on a product that meets Microsoft’s requirements and will allow local processing of more actions on AI PCs.

“This doesn’t mean that everything in Copilot will be processed locally, but you will have a lot of important features that will appear running on the NPU,” Intel’s head of PC ecosystem Todd Lewellen told the site.

Despite statements at the event, Intel did not provide a timeline for chips with 40 TOPS NPUs. Qualcomm is now preparing the launch of the Snapdragon X Elite with 45 TOPS for the end of this year.
