Samsung fixes burn-in problem on OLED screens

All about Samsung

The One UI 6.1 update, released by Samsung for selected Galaxy devices, brought back protections against burn-in (those spots) on OLED screens. The previous version, One UI 6.0 based on Android 14, had reduced these protections, especially in the status bar, allowing icons to stick to the screen and cause burn-in.

For those in a hurry:

  • Samsung has re-introduced burn-in protections on OLED screens in the One UI 6.1 update for Galaxy devices. The update corrects the reduction of these measures in the previous version, One UI 6.0;
  • One UI 6.1 revives the system that slightly moves icons in the status bar to prevent burn-in. Thus, the feature keeps the screen in better condition for longer, preventing permanent damage;
  • The One UI 6.1 update, available for models such as Galaxy S23 Ultra, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5 and Tab S9, not only resolves the burn-in issue, but brings new advanced artificial intelligence (AI) features.

Previously, Samsung used a system that moved icons in the status bar to prevent burn-in, a measure maintained only in the navigation bar and on the always-on screen. With One UI 6.1, the company restores this function, slightly moving the icons in the status bar to avoid permanent damage to the screen.

This change was observed in the Galaxy S23 Ultra by the Toranji website – the lack of burn-in protection had initially been noticed in this model. The One UI 6.1 update, now rolling out globally, includes this and other improvements.

In addition to the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the update is available for other models such as the Galaxy S23, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5 and Tab S9. Among the new features of One UI 6.1, the incorporation of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) features stands out, as well as the reintroduction of burn-in protection in the status bar.
