Discord will start showing advertising

Discord, a popular messaging application used mainly by gaming communities, will start showing advertising – after years of avoiding such a measure.

According to the Wall Street Journal portal, the platform confirmed that it will start presenting advertising in several areas of the platform during this week, in order to monetize users who use the service for free.

Advertising will be focused on topics that are targeted at users, with relevant content. For example, campaigns for video games and offers for extras within Discord are planned. It will also be possible to receive rewards based on actions made in certain games, where Discord is being used to communicate with friends.

Although advertising is quite common to find on many platforms, whether free or not, Discord had resisted its implementation. Since it was created in 2015, the platform had propagated itself as one of the communication points for gamers, which provided its services free of charge and without advertising.

This will now change slightly, with advertising appearing in several areas of the platform.

The same source indicates that users may have the ability to disable advertising, but it is still unknown whether this measure will only be applied to Nitro account users, or whether it will be available to free account users.

According to Discord, advertising will appear in different areas of the platform, and will be based on recommendations for each user, based on the games they use, age and location.
