Today marks an important step for Sony and PlayStation, with Hiroki Totoki officially beginning his term as interim CEO of the video game giant. Totoki’s appointment follows the departure of previous CEO Jim Ryan, announced in September 2023, with Totoki taking the helm on April 1, 2024.

Upon assuming his new role, Totoki inherits the responsibility of overseeing the PlayStation division while the selection of a permanent successor to Ryan is underway. Together with Sony Group Corporation President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida and the SIE management team, Totoki will be responsible for setting the direction of PlayStation, including the appointment of SIE’s next CEO.

Although he officially assumed his role today, Totoki has been actively involved in the video game sector, visiting studios and explaining his vision of Sony’s video game strategy. During a recent question and answer session following the presentation of Sony’s financial results, Totoki stressed the need for Sony to take an “aggressive” attitude to increase the gaming division’s profit margins, especially by expanding the presence of original games in the PRAÇA.

According to Totoki, adherence to multiplatform releases, including PC, is essential to boost the profitability and growth of the gaming division. He highlighted the importance of robust first-party content across multiple platforms to bolster operating profit, indicating a strategic shift in Sony’s game development and distribution approach.
