The 9th generation of consoles goes through turbulent periods during its life cycle and is not one of the most loved by the public, but, according to Jim Ryan, the PS5 is on track to become the “most successful” console of Sony’s history.
The statement is bold and it is not very clear whether it refers to the highest number of sales or the most profitable. Furthermore, the (now) ex-CEO of SIE’s speech goes against Sony’s sales below forecasts, but Ryan says that when stating this, he takes “multiple factors” into consideration.

Will PS5 be Sony’s most successful console?
The information was released on the PlayStation Blog podcast, Sony’s official portal, last Friday (March 29), in which Jim Ryan participated as his last day of work at the company.
I would say right now we are at our peak. The PS5 is on track to be our most successful console in history for multiple factors and I think the gaming experiences you get on PlayStation 5, led by PlayStation Studios, are the best we’ve ever seen.”

Unfortunately, Jim Ryan did not mention what factors were taken into consideration for the statementbut it seems that this is not even an optimistic conjecture for the former CEO, but rather a prediction based on internal data.
The only public data we know is that, by the end of December 2023, the PS5 had sold 53.8 million units worldwide, a considerable number, but which, for Sony, was still below forecasts.
This was not Ryan’s only statement on the podcast: according to the former CEO, the PS2, previously credited with 155 million sales, actually had 160 million units sold.
