The federal government expects the food prices will have a price reduction from April onwards. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) met this Thursday (14) with ministers to discuss measures to reduce the value of products such as rice, wheat, beans and cassava.

After the meeting, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Carlos Fávaro, said that the government has already identified a drop of around R$20% in the price of a bag of rice and that it expects this to be transferred in the same proportion to consumers in the markets.

“The cases of rice, at the end of the year, there was an increase in the price of rice in the supermarket […] The fact is that we have a harvest of around 10% in Rio Grande do Sul and prices to producers have already dropped from R$120 to R$100 per bag. What we hope is that if this price drop is transferred, wholesalers will also lower prices in the markets,” he stated.

According to the Minister of Agrarian Development, Paulo Teixeira, the price increase was caused by weather events.

“It occurred due to climate issues that were very important in Brazil, everyone saw the high temperature in the Center-West, the rains that occurred in the south of Brazil, in short, it was a seasonal increase that now tends to decrease”, pointed out Teixeira .

For other foods, such as wheat, corn, cassava and beans, the government is preparing strategies for the Safra Plan to reduce prices.
