Businessman Luciano Farah Nascimento, sentenced to more than 21 years in prison for the death of prosecutor Francisco Lins do Rêgo, in 2002, was arrested again this Saturday (16/3), in Nova Lima, in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (RMBH).

Luciano was the target of an arrest warrant, issued last Wednesday (14/3), as stated in the information system of the National Public Security Secretariat, for the murder of another man, at the same time.

Information about the arrest was confirmed to the report by the Civil Police of Minas Gerais (PCMG) and the State Secretariat of Justice and Public Security (Sejusp) of Minas Gerais.

The arrest warrant was carried out by the Civil Police. After the procedures, Luciano Farah was sent to the Nova Lima prison system and remains at the disposal of the Court. The arrest request was presented by the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG) and accepted by the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais (TJMG).

According to the MPMG, ten days before the prosecutor’s murder, in January 2002, Luciano Farah Nascimento had committed another murder, in Contagem, in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte. The victim was hit by at least 16 shots, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

“After two trials by the Jury Court and successive appeals, he and the perpetrator of the crime had the sentence carried out by the TJMG, in 16 years of imprisonment. The MPMG, faced with the fixed sentence, provoked the Court to issue a warrant of prison, since, since the approval of the law popularly known as “Anti-Crime Package” – Law 13,964/19, convictions in the Jury Court to a sentence equal to or greater than 15 years must be immediately executed”, informed the agency.

According to the State Secretariat for Justice and Public Security (Sejusp-MG), Luciano entered the prison system for the first time in February 2002. He spent time at the Nelson Virgínia and José Maria Alkimin Penitentiary, where he remained until 2011, moving to the open regime. In 2013, he received authorization to serve his sentence under house arrest and in 2015 he had his electronic ankle bracelet removed.

The case

Luciano Farah was sentenced to 21 years and six for the murder of the prosecutor of the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG) in 2002. Chico Lins, as he was called by colleagues and friends, was killed as a result of the investigations he led to combat the adulteration of fuels in Belo Horizonte and the Metropolitan Region.

The crime took place on January 25, 2002 in the Center-South region of the capital of Minas Gerais, when he was on his way to work. When stopping at the traffic lights on Rua Joaquim Murtinho and Avenida Prudente de Morais, in the Santo Antônio neighborhood, the prosecutor’s car was paired with a motorcycle with two passengers. The motorcycle advanced and the driver ordered the passenger: “Shoot!” More than ten shots hit the prosecutor, who died instantly.

Luciano Farah Nascimento, who was driving the motorcycle, was identified as the person behind the crime. He owned a network of gas stations that adulterated fuel. At the time, this chain had been banned by the prosecutor from reselling gasoline after it was found that the product was adulterated. The company would also be evading taxes from the State Revenue. The shooter was soldier Édson Souza Nogueira de Paula.
