Social networks have become a powerful platform for disseminating information and trends, influencing the lives of millions of users. However, when it comes to dental treatments, the presence of influencers who recommend products without proper professional consultation can pose serious risks to oral health.

With the rapid growth of influencer marketing, several influencers have ventured into recommending products and techniques for dental care.

These recommendations often seem like quick and affordable solutions, but it is crucial to understand that each mouth is unique, and inadequate treatment can cause irreparable damage.

Misinformation and false promises

According to José Todescan Júnior, specialist in Dental Prosthesis, pediatric dentistry and endodontics, as well as a member of the Brazilian Society of Aesthetic Dentistry, dental self-medication encouraged by influencers presents several problems.

“Products such as teeth whiteners, aligners and even home procedures are presented as safe alternatives, but the lack of professional supervision can result in complications, such as tooth sensitivity, damage to the enamel and even infections”, he reveals.

Digital influencers often promote products promising miraculous results, without scientific basis or dental knowledge.

“These false promises can deceive followers, leading them to believe that they are carrying out safe procedures, when, in reality, they are putting their oral health at risk”, he warns.

Dentistry off-screen

Todescan believes that regular consultation with a dental professional is essential to ensure adequate oral health.

“The dentist’s personalized assessment considers factors such as medical history, specific mouth conditions and individual needs. Ignoring this crucial step can result in serious problems, which could be avoided with adequate guidance”, he points out.

For the expert, influencers have a great responsibility when recommending health products, including dental products.

“It is essential that they understand the importance of alerting their followers about the need to consult a professional before starting any treatment. Furthermore, social media platforms must implement measures to prevent the dissemination of information that is harmful to health”, he says.

The search for a perfect smile should not be compromised by the uninformed influence of social media personalities.

“The dangers of following recommendations from influencers without professional consultation are evident, and it is crucial to raise public awareness of the importance of seeking guidance from a dentist before embarking on any dental treatment. Oral health is a fundamental part of general well-being, and should not be neglected in favor of digital fads”, he concludes.

HOMEWORK inspires transformation in the world of work, in business, in society. It is the creation of Compasso, a content and connection agency.
