NAt the end of the final arguments, which took place throughout the day at the S. João Novo Court, in Porto, one of the main defendants, Renato Gonçalves, asked to speak and apologized to the family of the victim, Igor Silva, and to the defendants “who had nothing to do with it.”
Igor Silva was killed with 18 stab wounds during the celebrations of winning the title of national football champion by FC Porto, with 11 defendants being tried over the events in Alameda do Estádio do Dragão, seven of which were for murder.
In the final arguments, the Public Ministry (MP), prosecutor Adriana Faria asked for the “maximum sentence” (25 years in prison) for Marco Gonçalves, Renato Gonçalves and Paulo Cardoso (father, son and uncle) and a “sentence close to the maximum” for Diogo Meireles, the four main defendants in the case of Igor Silva’s death.
For the remaining defendants accused of that crime (Miguel Pereira, Rui Costa and Sérgio Machado), the MP asked for “exemplary sentences”, and effective prison sentences for the rest, Renato Gonçalves’ mother and sister and a friend of these, accused of offenses to the physical integrity of a young woman.
The lawyer for Renato’s sister and mother repudiated the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s claim, which requested effective prison sentences for both of them and also for Cassandra, their friend.
“Marisa and Iara, if they weren’t Marco’s wife and daughter, wouldn’t even be defendants in this case. Sentenced to an effective sentence for two people for offenses? Are they aggravated by the result? It wouldn’t be justice”, defended Poliana Ribeiro, and the lawyer for Cassandra followed the same reasoning regarding her client’s non-participation in the events of that night.
As for the defendant Miguel Pereira, the lawyer discredited the testimony of the witnesses who linked him to the facts, highlighting that “no one could have guessed that Igor would be” at the title festivities in that place and that “they cannot be condemned for going up and down stairs at run”.
For Sérgio Machado’s lawyer, “no witnesses” pointed to this defendant as the author of any stabbing or were able to clarify without doubt his client’s involvement in the events of that night, which is why Ricardo Pinto asked for this defendant’s acquittal.
As for the defendant Rui Costa, lawyer Luísa Macanjo highlighted that he does not appear in “any image” linked to the facts, arguing that he cannot be “guilty for what he did not do”.
Moments before, Renato and Marco Gonçalves’ lawyers admitted that their clients “acted badly”, but condemned the “trial in public square” of which they say the defendants were the targets, highlighting that the MP’s objective “is only to condemn and not discover the truth.”
Poliana Ribeiro, who also represented Marco Gonçalves, highlighted that “even before the trial began” her client was already convicted.
“Marco has to be guilty. Before being judged, Marco was already guilty, Marco has to be guilty or no one will understand this”, he said.
The reading of the ruling is scheduled for May 7th.
On May 8, 2022, at around 2:00 am, during the celebrations of the national football champion title won by FC Porto, some of the defendants got involved in a heated exchange of words with the fatal victim, next to Estádio do Dragão, sustains.
The prosecution also adds that, motivated by a desire for revenge, some of the suspects chased, restrained and assaulted Igor Silva with the purpose of taking his life, attacking him with punches, punches and kicks and using a knife with a fence blade. 15 to 20 centimeters.
As a result, the fatal victim was stabbed several times in different parts of the body and, despite being transported to the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João, in Porto, he ended up dying, he says.
