Promote access to quality water at acceptable prices for all. Objective of the national campaign launched today, in São Vicente by ADECO, to reduce the price of water in municipal fountains and sinks. The initiative, expected to last six months, also includes information and awareness among citizens about their rights in access to water.

Information provided at a press conference, by António Pedro Silva, promoter of the project, in partnership with ADECO.

“Because the population is paying a direct cost of around four times the cost, for example, of the City purchasing water from Electra. It’s three times more expensive per cubic meter when bought in the jar than what I pay at home [através da água canalizada]. It’s a huge inequality, it’s unacceptable justice,” she explains.

António Pedro Silva recalls that, in 2014, ADECO launched a similar campaign. The idea is that people who buy water from fountains, sentinels and fountains pay a price lower than the lowest rate charged to those who have piped water.

“When you buy a 5-liter container of water for 5 escudos, you are paying 1,000 escudos per ton. And a large part of the population thinks they are paying a cheap price, because it is a small amount. If you buy 25 liters of water for 20 escudos, you are paying 800 escudos per public meter. It is in this sense that we will develop this campaign, once again. We are going to carry out actions on the different islands of the country (…) to inform the population for pressure and change, in addition to contact with the authorities”, he states.

The launch of the ADECO campaign marks the celebration of World Water Day, which this year takes place under the motto “Water for peace”.

According to the United Nations, new economic and social realities, including climate and geopolitical changes, have water implications. Sustainable water management is fundamental to regional stability, conflict prevention and sustainable development.
