A 28-year-old man was arrested when he disembarked in Fernando de Noronha this Saturday (23) with 468 grams of cocaine and hashish. The suspect, whose name was not revealed, entered the airport bathroom in an attitude considered suspicious. Upon leaving the bathroom, he was approached by the Military Police, who found the drugs.

A joint note released by the PM and the Civil Police reported that 292 grams of cocaine and 176 grams of hashish were found.

The island’s police chief, Marcos Castro, said that the police found the drugs were in the man’s bag.

“Five packages were located: three packages with cocaine and two other packages with hashish. He informed that he was only transporting the narcotics and would pass it on to someone, but he did not reveal his name,” said delegate Marcos Castro.

According to Castro, the man stated that he has been a resident of Fernando de Noronha for ten years and works independently on tourist boat tours.

The delegate informed that the accused remains detained on the island and, on Sunday (24), will be subject to a custody hearing. The man may be released, or preventive detention may be ordered.

If arrest is ordered, the accused will be transferred to the Professor Everardo Luna Observation and Screening Center (Cotel), in Abreu e Lima, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife.
