PS wants to urgently create support for the payment of rent for displaced Azorean students

The Parliamentary Group of the Socialist Party questioned the PSD/CDS/PPM Regional Government about why support mechanisms for young Azorean students had not yet been created, such as the Support Office for Azorean students residing in the Azores attending higher education. and support for the payment of housing rents to displaced Azorean students.

In a request delivered to the Regional Legislative Assembly of the Azores, the first signatory of the socialists’ request, Russell Sousa, recalls that the Parliament of the Azores approved almost three years ago, in June 2021, unanimously, a Draft Resolution that aimed to create these support for displaced Azorean students.

“Almost three years later, we see that this PSD/CDS/PPM Regional Government does not even implement the recommendations of the parties that make up it, since the draft resolution in question came from the CDS-PP. One of two: either the Government does not respect the recommendations of the coalition parties themselves, or this draft resolution and its approval by the right-wing parties was nothing more than sand in the eyes of displaced Azorean students”, lamented Russell Sousa.

On National Student Day, the socialist deputy, who is also leader of the Socialist Youth of the Azores, recalled that the PS/Açores “defends the creation of extraordinary support for Azorean families who have displaced students in higher or professional education, in order to to help them face the increase in housing costs they had to bear”.

“We are well aware of the importance of this matter, both for students who are displaced between islands and for all those who are displaced on the mainland. This is a pressing issue, which very recently motivated a national demonstration by students, who are experiencing many difficulties in finding and paying for decent housing while they study”, highlighted Russell Sousa.

The parliamentarian lamented that the PSD/CDS/PPM Regional Government turns a “blind eye to this recommendation” and prefers to “whistle to the side and push forward with its belly, as if it had no responsibilities or skills to contribute to the qualification of young Azoreans”.

“When does the Regional Government of the Azores, from the PSD/CDS/PPM coalition, intend to create the Office to support Azorean students residing in the Azores attending higher education? When will the Regional Government create a mechanism to support the payment of housing rents to displaced Azorean students? These are simple questions, which deserve quick and direct answers from the Regional Government”, highlighted socialist parliamentarian, Russell Sousa.
