Marielle: arrested police officer was accused by militia member of covering up crime

Delegate Rivaldo Barbosa, former head of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro arrested this Sunday (24/3) on suspicion of hindering investigations into the murder of councilwoman Marielle Franco, has already been accused by a militia member of protecting criminals involved in murders in Rio de Janeiro, including in the Marielle case. Barbosa took over the Civil Police the day before the murder.

In November 2018, six months after the death of Marielle and driver Anderson Gomes, former police officer and militia member Orlando de Curicica told the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) that the Civil Police, then headed by Rivaldo Barbosa, had no interest in solving the Marielle case. Curicica reinforced his statement in an interview with the newspaper O Globo at the time.

“There is a battalion of killers acting for money, most of them from misdemeanors. DH [Delegacia de Homicídios] and the Chief of Police, Rivaldo Barbosa, know who they are, but they receive money from criminals so as not to touch or direct the investigations.” At the time, Rivaldo Barbosa denied any wrongdoing and refuted the accusations.

Six years after Marielle’s murder, the Federal Police arrested this Sunday (24/3) the brothers Domingo Brazão, counselor at the Rio de Janeiro Court of Auditors, and Chiquinho Brazão, federal deputy, suspected of being the masterminds of the crime. Rivaldo Barbosa, also detained, is suspected of hindering investigations while commanding the Civil Police.
