Few things can anger fans as much as when a studio decides to take a slightly different approach to a saga with several decades of history. This scenario materialized in the last year of 2022 in the Predator universe, whose fifth feature film decided to deviate from the beaten path and travel back in time in what is, without a doubt, the most lucid and stimulating film in the franchise since the original 1987.

Under the title The Predator: The Hunt in our lands -, the people at the extinct 20th Century Fox, now owned by Disney and renamed 20th Century Studios, gave the license a good makeover, giving it back the spirit of survival and taking a step forward to put a young warrior of the nation Comanche against the deadly titular creature. Without a doubt, a great success that helped make him the best Predator since 1987.

Much of the blame for this feat, in addition to the delivery of protagonist Amber Midthunder and a more than remarkable audiovisual finish, was due to Dan Trachtenberg’s tremendously lucid direction. The filmmaker, after surprising everyone with his brilliant debut in 10 Cloverfield Street – which came after his work on Black Mirror -, once again showed his intelligence and resource management to deliver a spectacle full of action and emotion without anything to envy his predecessors.

Perhaps the worst thing about the film is the way it was relegated to streaming in the convulsive post-pandemic scenario of 2022, seeing its 65 million budget wasted on the small screen through Hulu and Disney+, depending on the territory; not to mention the absurd bombardment of criticism to which it was subjected on different aggregators by the usual people – yes, those who seem to resent a woman starring in a contemporary action film –
