Rain leaves a scene of destruction in Mimoso in the South, in the south of ES
Sixteen people died and around 5,736 are out of their homes because of the heavy rains that hit the south of Espírito Santo between the night of Friday (22) and the early hours of this Saturday (23). The information was released by the Extraordinary Bulletin of the State Coordination of Protection and Civil Defense (Cepdec) this Sunday morning (24).
The deputy state coordinator of Civil Defense, Lieutenant Colonel Benicio Ferrari Junior informed that in Mimoso do Sul the water is already receding and, as a result, the teams are able to access more areas.
“In this work of accessing more locations, the death count has increased. We will continue working throughout the day to access all the victims,” he said.
Intense rains also hit the state of Rio de Janeiro, where eight deaths were recorded. The most critical scenario is in Petrópolis, in the Serrana region of RJ, where it has rained more than 340 mm since Friday. It’s a very large volume in a short time. The average in the city for the entire month of March is 250 mm.
Homeless and homeless
The government of Espírito Santo declared an emergency on Saturday night in 13 cities affected by the rains. In total, 5,481 people are homeless and another 273 are unsheltered.
The municipality with the highest number of homeless people is Bom Jesus do Norte, with around 3 thousand people away from home. In relation to the homeless, the municipality with the highest number of people in this situation is Apiacá (179).

Also according to the State Civil Defense, the municipalities that recorded the most rainfall in the last 24 hours are Santa Teresa (75.1), Cachoeiro de Itapemirim (71.3), Santa Maria de Jetibá (58.23), followed by of Aracruz (53.57) and Fundão (51.8).
According to the State Civil Defense, three meteorological alerts are in effect in Espírito Santo, two of which are for intense rain and one for heavy rainfall.
One of the weather warnings is valid until 11:59 pm this Sunday. The warning is of danger for the South and Central, Northwest and North Coast regions of the state.
Also according to the State Civil Defense, the rain caused closures on some sections of state and federal highways.
- BR-101: Km 461- Mimoso do Sul/ES (ES x RJ border) – Lane closed due to the level of the Itabapoana river, requiring the closure of the border bridge for safety reasons.
- BR-482: Km 35 and 42 – Closure between the Alegre and Guaçuí sections.
