Middle Tennessee State University led the reigning champion LSU Tigers 36-32 at halftime of their second round March Madness game Sunday. through the end of the second quarter. If that score held, it would have been a massive upset.

But, it didn’t. No. 3 LSU came out of the half firing, and quickly regained the lead over No. 11 MTSU. The Tigers closed out the game up 83-56 to advance to the Sweet 16. Next up for LSU is the winner between No. 2 UCLA and No. 7 Creighton.

Before that second-half comeback, star forward Angel Reese only had six points and missed three consecutive shots in the final two minutes of the period. LSU’s 12 points were the fewest amount in the second quarter they’ve scored this season. They had three players with two fouls, including starter Aneesah Morrow.

For MTSU, fifth-year senior Savannah Wheeler scored 10 points, five assists and five rebounds at the half. She held LSU’s graduate student guard Hailey Van Lith scoreless. The Louisville transfer averages 12.1 points per game. Wheeler finished with 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Angel Reese came alive in the second half. She checked out of the game with 1:55 on the clock and finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and a block. Aneesah Morrow added 19 points and 13 boards.

Last year’s SEC freshman of the year, Flau’jae Johnson, shined from every inch of the court with 21 points and four rebounds.
