This Monday (25), the United Nations Security Council votes on the new draft resolution for an “immediate” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which was presented by France, after China and Russia vetoed the previous proposal from United States.

Russia, China and Algeria claimed that they vetoed the US proposed resolution because they considered it “ambiguous”, in addition to arguing that it did not directly demand an end to the fighting. Russia and China, permanent members of the UN Council, called it a “hypocritical spectacle”.

The Council has only approved two resolutions on the subject since the October 7 attack, which are essentially humanitarian. But results are scarce and aid to Gaza remains extremely insufficient and famine is imminent.

Several other political resolutions were rejected by US vetoes on the one hand and Russian and Chinese vetoes on the other, or by an insufficient number of votes. However, this resolution, proposed after more than five months of war, marked the first time the US called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza in the Security Council.

China has already announced today that it will support the new draft resolution in the Security Council that demands an “immediate” ceasefire in Gaza. “China supports this draft resolution and commends Algeria and other Arab countries for their hard work in this regard. We hope that the Security Council will approve it as soon as possible and send a strong signal for the end of hostilities,” said Lin Jian , spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“We are seeing the emergence of a growing consensus in the international community to tell the Israelis that the ceasefire is necessary, which I have heard in the US, I have heard in the European Union, not to mention, of course, the Muslim world, to tell the Israelis clearly that Any land invasion of Rafah could mean a humanitarian disaster,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The United States has also warned the Tel Aviv government that moving forward with a military operation in Rafah would be “a big mistake”, in addition to having consequences for Israel.

Last Sunday’s air strikes in Gaza killed 107 people and injured 176. In total, there have been more than 32,000 fatalities since the start of the conflict, more than 74,000 Palestinians injured and around eight thousand missing, probably under rubble caused by bombings.
